The USA, one coast at a time.
New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. A first American journey built around neighbourhoods, history and breathing room.

An editorial route suggestion. Transfer days count; transport, availability and your preferences determine what is practical.
- 01
New York City
5 daysStart with an easy arrival and one nearby meal. Give Central Park time of its own, group other visits by neighbourhood and leave a flexible block for weather or a favourite museum. Check which airport is printed on your booking.
- 02
Philadelphia
3 daysInclude the journey from New York. Use the historic centre as a starting point, with the Liberty Bell area and time for neighbourhood walks. Check individual attraction arrangements instead of assuming one ticket covers every historic building.
- 03
Washington, DC
6 daysCount the transfer and final departure within these days. Spread the National Mall and memorials over manageable visits, add museums according to your interests and leave an unplanned day. Confirm the airport and the full route there before your last morning.
For 10 days: 4 in New York, 2 in Philadelphia and 4 in Washington, DC, including travel days. This is an East Coast city route, not an attempt to see the whole USA. Add another region only if you can give the extra travel time its own place.
Good things to know.
Your first hour: airport to actual address
Save the full accommodation address, arrival instructions and the route from the correct airport. Compare the official airport and transport information before committing to a transfer. Keep bookings available offline and allow for immigration, luggage and reaching your neighbourhood. Avoid an expensive timed event on the arrival evening. A flight arriving in the New York area does not mean you are already in central Manhattan.
Give New York a neighbourhood rhythm
Use Central Park as a proper part of the trip rather than a quick stop between attractions. Choose other days around a few nearby places so that you spend less time crossing the city. Check the attraction’s own website for reservations and visitor guidance. Leave a weather alternative and a quieter meal break in every busy day. You do not need to buy a pass before you know which paid sights you actually want.
Let Philadelphia be more than a transfer
The Liberty Bell provides a clear starting point for exploring the historic area. The National Park Service publishes current access and visitor information; check separate arrangements for other buildings. Give yourself time for a neighbourhood walk and a relaxed meal beyond the main landmarks. A shorter list makes it easier to enjoy the middle of the trip rather than treating it as a stop on the way somewhere else.
Walk Washington in smaller pieces
The National Mall and its memorials cover more distance than a compact map suggests. Divide visits into areas, keep water and weather in mind and build in seated breaks. Pick museums for your interests rather than counting how many you enter. Consult the National Park Service and each museum for current access, security arrangements or timed-entry requirements. Keep the last day suitable for your actual departure airport.
Compare intercity journeys door to door
Check rail, bus or other transport using the exact departure and arrival stations, luggage rules and total travel time. Book with the operator after reviewing current conditions and cancellation terms. Save the ticket and station information offline. Do not assume the cheapest headline fare is the best total cost, or that a missed connection on a separate booking will be protected.
Make a dollar budget with room for the final total
The USA uses the US dollar (USD). Set separate amounts for accommodation, intercity journeys, city transport, meals and activities. Check the final price for taxes, service charges or other fees instead of comparing headline amounts alone. Review any gratuity or service charge already on a bill. Our converter provides a reference; your actual card or exchange rate and fees may differ.
Season, documents and practical backups
Check the forecast for each city and keep indoor options for very hot, cold or wet days. Review official entry requirements for your passport and journey before booking; eligibility is personal and this article is not an immigration decision. Keep important documents securely available, insurance contact details handy and a second payment method separate from the first. Use the official advice links in the country guide for current information.
Choose an eSIM for this route, not a marketing label
Read which US network the exact plan uses, when validity begins and whether hotspot is allowed. Check your exact phone model and unlocked status. City coverage does not promise service underground, in every building or on every intercity journey. Download entertainment before transfers and keep tickets offline. If the plan is data-only, do not assume it includes a local phone number, voice calls or SMS. The calculator below estimates data from your habits and sends the same days and allowance to our comparison.
