An editorial route suggestion. Transfer days count; transport, availability and your preferences determine what is practical.
- 01
Tokyo
5 daysGive yourself an easy arrival day. Pick one neighbourhood at a time: pair a busy shopping district with a quieter garden or a small café stop. Keep the first evening close to your accommodation.
- 02
Kyoto
5 daysMake space for the journey from Tokyo. Group your visits by area rather than crossing the city repeatedly. Choose one main sight for the morning and leave the afternoon flexible.
- 03
Osaka
4 daysEnd with food, neighbourhood walks and time to revisit a favourite spot. Treat an extra day trip as an option, not another obligation. Check the journey to your actual departure airport.
For 10 days: 4 in Tokyo, 4 in Kyoto and 2 in Osaka. Include transfer days in those totals. Skip an extra stop if it makes the trip feel rushed.
Good things to know.
Start with your arrival, not your sightseeing list
Save the accommodation address, check-in instructions and the journey from your arrival airport before you leave. Tokyo has more than one airport: check the one printed on your ticket. A screenshot of a booking is useful when a connection is slow, but keep personal booking details private.
Make the route feel like a holiday
Our suggested split is a starting point. Put the experiences you care most about on the map, then choose accommodation that makes those days manageable. Leave space between timed reservations. Check opening times on the attraction’s own website, especially for a must-see visit.
Plan train journeys before choosing a pass
List the actual journeys you intend to take and compare the current fares and pass conditions with the railway operator. Do not assume a nationwide pass is cheaper for this itinerary. Keep station names and reservation details available offline, and allow time to find the right platform with luggage.
A small money routine helps
Japan uses the yen (JPY). Use the currency converter in our country guide for a reference budget, then check the actual rate and fees with your bank. Keep more than one practical payment option. Check how your chosen transport card or ticket is purchased and topped up before relying on it.
Maps, translation and the moments between
A data connection is useful for finding an exit, translating a menu or messaging your accommodation. Download language packs and any available offline map features before departure; offline functions vary by app and location. Save key station names and addresses separately rather than assuming every navigation feature works offline.
Choose your data around your habits
The calculator below is a planning model, not a measurement of your phone. Video uploads, cloud photo backups and laptop tethering can change your needs quickly. Check the named network, validity start, top-up options and hotspot conditions for the exact plan. A country-wide coverage claim does not guarantee service in every building, train or rural area.
How much data will you take?
Use the same planning model as our existing data helper. Adjust your trip, then compare current plans.
Daily assumptions: light 0.15 GB; regular 0.5 GB; heavy 1.5 GB. Total × 1.2, rounded up. Actual usage varies by app, quality and settings.
